Communications Officer (999 And 101)

Closing date: Ongoing
Salary: Circa £42,000
Recruitment code: Oleeo 11827
Location: Hendon, Bow or Lambeth

Met Command and Control (MetCC) provides London with its police response service, handling some 13,000 emergency and non-emergency phone calls and 12,000 interactions via our digital platforms 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Specialist police communications support is also provided for some 500 large-scale public events that take place across the capital each year. Naturally this means we have a fast-paced dynamic environment, where no two days will be the same.

We are looking for great people to join our team throughout 2023.

You will be customer-focussed and professional, have attention to detail and a calm head under pressure. Above all, you’ll have the drive and determination to make a difference to the communities of London. With the volume of requests handled through our teams each day, the importance of these roles can never be underestimated.

The role of a communications officer

Our advisors are the first point of contact for those seeking assistance from the police response service. The average day could look like:

  • handling emergency and non-emergency calls. We work with a framework, and you will triage calls in accordance with this, assessing each one’s priority and risks
  • prioritising a response to incidents
  • working with colleagues across the boroughs of London to manage our response to requests for assistance
  • facilitating telephone interpreting for callers who speak little or no English, building confidence across our multi-cultural communities and for those visiting the capital
  • contacting the next of kin and family of victims to gain vital intelligence to support officers at a scene
  • carry out police national computer enquiries on behalf of officers, for example vehicle and name checks

Do you have a say in where and when you work?

All new staff will be expected to work full time for the first 26 weeks for one of our core teams. After this period you may submit a flexible working application to work part-time. However this process can take a further three months from the date of submission. Please note all requests for flexible working are assessed on a case by case basis and must meet the business need for approval. This review process may take some time and is not guaranteed.

You will be required to work a 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year, variable shift pattern. This includes nights and public holidays. We support flexible working, but as an emergency service with a 24 hours a day, seven days a week responsibility to the people of London, flexible working may not always be possible. You can ask questions about this during the recruitment process at either our assessment centre, or during our online 'meet and engage' sessions.

The normal working hours are 36 hours per week, full time, excluding breaks. Working a shift pattern does give you a shift disturbance allowance and flexibility allowance. We’ll discuss this further with you during the recruitment process.

We have vacancies across our three locations:

  • Hendon
  • Lambeth
  • Bow

During the recruitment process, you'll be asked questions about where you’d like to be posted. Your posting will be confirmed once a final offer is accepted and is subject to your successful completion of training.

We cannot guarantee that we can place you where you want as operational requirements will inform where we need to post new joiners. However, we will try to work with your preference where possible. On occasion, there may be a requirement for you to work at other locations based on operational need.

Please note, there is no parking available any of the MetCC centres, only in exceptional circumstances.
